Before he was celebrated as an arranger and conductor, Oliver Nelson made his name as a versatile small-group leader and composer. Screamin' the Blues is a rousing set of funky modernism, its inspired pairing of Nelson with multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy yielding an uncommon diversity of colors, backed by Richard Williams (trumpet), Richard Wyands (piano), George Duvivier (bass), and Roy Haynes (drums).
