Ortofon - 2M Blue Replacement Stylus

The most useful single upgrade Ortofon sells: fitted to a 2M Red body, it turns the cartridge into a genuine 2M Blue.

This is a replacement stylus that doubles as an upgrade, and Ortofon says so in its own words: the Stylus 2M Blue is the correct replacement for an existing 2M Blue and a natural upgrade for a 2M Red.

The reason it works is that the 2M Red and 2M Blue are electrically the same cartridge. Same 5.5mV output, same 1.3k ohm and 700mH generator, same quad-coil configuration. The entire difference between the two models lives in the diamond: the Red carries a tipped elliptical, the Blue a nude elliptical of the same 8/18 µm radius. Mounting the diamond nude cuts the moving mass at the tip, and Ortofon’s own figures show the result — tracking ability rises from 70 to 80 µm, channel separation from 22 to 25dB, frequency response tightens from +3/−1dB to +2/−1dB.

Ortofon’s instruction for the upgrade is as simple as it sounds: buy the Blue stylus, pull the tip off your 2M Red, push the new one on. Nothing else changes, and no realignment is required. Ortofon lists the upgrade targets as the 2M Red, 2MR Red and 2M Red Premounted.

The arithmetic customers work out for themselves: a Red plus this stylus costs more than a Blue bought outright. That makes this the right move for an existing Red owner facing a worn stylus, and the wrong move as a purchasing strategy from scratch.

• Note: Ortofon’s own compatibility list names the standard, 2MR and premounted bodies but omits the bottom-mount Verso. The Verso is mechanically the same body with a reversed top plate, so the stylus does fit, but Ortofon has never put that in writing — we would rather tell you that than pretend the endorsement exists
