[Pre Order] Big Mama Thornton - Big Mama Thornton with Muddy Waters' Blues Band - LP

Release Date: December 4, 2026

Smithsonian Folkways reissues the Arhoolie classic in mono with a tip-on cover and the original artwork, for Big Mama Thornton's centennial.

This reissue marks the centennial of a Rock & Roll Hall of Famer and Blues Hall of Famer, a rock & roll, blues and rhythm & blues originator, a primary influence on Elvis Presley and on the British blues bands of the 1960s, and the subject of a new PBS documentary. She had a million-selling, R&B chart-topping hit with "Hound Dog," later covered by Presley, and went on to inspire Janis Joplin — who recorded her "Ball n' Chain" — and Alabama Shakes.

This album finds her recording with the legendary Muddy Waters Blues Band, including Muddy himself on guitar, James Cotton on harmonica and Otis Spann on piano.
