To this day jazz pianists are influenced by Bill Evans — his impressionist harmony, his interpretation of traditional jazz repertoire, and his trademark rhythmically independent, singing melodic lines. After gaining his first spotlight with Miles Davis' sextet during the Kind of Blue sessions, Evans launched his career as a bandleader. With Marc Johnson on bass and Joe LaBarbera on drums, the trio recorded The Brilliant in 1980, just before Evans' passing.
