Released six months after Miles Davis' Bitches Brew, Electric Byrd shows the legendary hard-bop Detroit trumpeter Donald Byrd listening to the new directions in jazz without simply following them. Backed by a diverse group that adds Brazilian players Airto Moreira and Hermeto Pascoal for a fresh sound, shimmering percussion, winds, electric piano and guitar set the backdrop for Byrd's echo-laden trumpet and its dramatic flight into psychedelic space. The album closes on a rollicking funk that foreshadows the gold Byrd would soon mine with the Mizell Brothers — a true glimpse of an artist in transition.
