Donald Byrd's 1967 date Slow Drag was one of the last pure hard bop sessions the trumpeter cut before moving toward fusion. Propelled by the tremendous drumming of Billy Higgins, the quintet — with alto saxophonist Sonny Red, pianist Cedar Walton and bassist Walter Booker — grooves across a varied, deeply satisfying set. This stereo Tone Poet edition was produced by Joe Harley and mastered by Kevin Gray from the original analog master tapes.
