Recorded for Impulse! in 1967, this session began as a planned trio date but turned into something special when the guitarist failed to appear — yielding an 11½-minute duet on "Summertime" between drummer Elvin Jones and bassist Richard Davis. The following day, saxophonist Frank Foster and pianist Billy Greene joined to round out the set, including "Elvin's Guitar Blues," the only recorded guitar performance by Jones.
