Underrated hard bop pianist and composer Freddie Redd followed his Blue Note debut with Shades of Redd, a 1960 session of six original compositions. He is joined by a stellar quintet featuring Jackie McLean on alto sax, Tina Brooks on tenor sax, Paul Chambers on bass and Louis Hayes on drums. Highlights include the dramatic opener "The Thespian," the swaggering "Blues-Blues-Blues" and the twilit ballad "Shadows."
