Grachan Moncur III was the first avant-garde jazz trombonist, and Evolution (recorded 1963) is one of his two dazzling Blue Note classics. Featuring Jackie McLean, Lee Morgan, Bobby Hutcherson, Bob Cranshaw and a teenaged Tony Williams, the four Moncur compositions are dramatic, episodic and full of surprises.
