Grant Green's one and only Verve session — a deep-grooving 1965 soul-jazz summit with Larry Young, remastered all-analog for the Verve Acoustic Sounds Series.

Cut in May 1965 with Creed Taylor producing, His Majesty King Funk is the sound of Grant Green stepping outside Blue Note for a single album and making it count. Reunited with organist Larry Young — their last recording together — and joined by Harold Vick on tenor, Ben Dixon on drums and the great Candido Camero on congas, Green leans hard into the blues-soaked, danceable side of his playing without ever losing the melodic clarity and understated swing that made him singular. "The Selma March" opens with eight and a half minutes of slow-burning gospel-funk, "Willow Weep For Me" stretches into a luxurious ten-minute ballad reading, and "The Cantaloupe Woman" and "Daddy Grapes" deliver the greasy boogaloo grooves that would make Green a favorite of crate-diggers and samplers decades later. Mastered from the original analog tapes by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab and pressed at Quality Record Pressings on 180-gram vinyl in a heavyweight tip-on jacket.
