Tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson capped his run of five sublime 1960s Blue Note leader dates with the 1966 classic Mode for Joe — an album bursting with vigor and vitality. He expanded his palette with a septet of colorful figures including Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, Bobby Hutcherson, Cedar Walton, Ron Carter, and Joe Chambers. The standout is Walton's modal title track, where Henderson summons one of his most transcendent solo statements.
