Kenny Cox and The Contemporary Jazz Quintet - Multidirection - Third Man LP
180g Vinyl, Third Man 313 Series, Tip-On Jacket
Recorded at GM Recording Studio in East Detroit in 1969, Multidirection is a landmark from Kenny Cox and the Contemporary Jazz Quintet — a Detroit group whose recorded legacy keeps growing in estimation. Cox and trumpeter Charles Moore, a key figure in the city's jazz and arts scene, composed all the material, which Cox described as "more of an orchestral-type effort than just a combo per se." The pair would go on to co-found the influential Strata Records, but first cut two timeless classics for Blue Note, of which this is one. Personnel: Kenny Cox (piano), Charles Moore (trumpet), Leon Henderson (tenor sax), Ron Brooks (bass) and Danny Spencer (drums).
