Mountain Call is a peak achievement in Miroslav Vitous's music, presenting the bassist in varied ensemble configurations alongside the late French clarinetist Michel Portal and drummer Jack DeJohnette. Effectively a self-portrait, it brings together his work as improviser, jazz composer, arranger and creative sampling pioneer, balancing in-the-moment playing with studio-shaped settings. The album marks Esperanza Spalding's first ECM appearance on the five-part suite "Rhapsody," and was produced by Vitous and Manfred Eicher.
