An undisputed architect of what we now know as modern rock and roll, Sister Rosetta Tharpe made history with 1956's Gospel Train — her first release for Mercury Records and her first album available on the then-new 12" long-playing format. The record harnesses Tharpe's distinctive blend of primordial, electric guitar-driven blues and traditional gospel in a polished studio setting, backed by first-call session musicians including the vocal quartet the Harmonizing Four.
