On Ow ∞ (pronounced "Ow Infinity"), Sylvan Esso metabolize a life of making music with people into a tactile, enveloping freefall. Written across four years in the woods in Chapel Hill — the longest the duo has ever spent on a record — it arrives with an intense immediacy: most of these are Amelia Meath's first vocal takes, and the clarity of her voice anchors the album in something real. A large chunk was born from improvisation at their North Carolina studio, with guest collaborators including Glenn Kotche (Wilco), Matt Douglas (the Mountain Goats), Jenn Wasner (Wye Oak, Flock of Dimes), Joe Westerlund (Megafaun), Jake Luppen (Hippo Campus, Samia), Daniel Aged (Frank Ocean, Dijon) and drummer TJ Maiani (Weyes Blood, Neneh Cherry).

The result is sinewy, punchy and explosive — songs that want to claw their way out. It's also the first Sylvan Esso record made entirely on their own terms: their studio, their label, their people. For an album that wrestles so hard with the out-of-control nature of being alive, it lands at the moment the duo finally have complete control over what Sylvan Esso can be.
