40th anniversary reissue of Throwing Muses' 1986 debut, newly remastered and back in print.
In August 1986, 4AD released the self-titled debut album from Rhode Island's Throwing Muses, and the reviews read like writers struggling to believe what they were hearing. For its 40th anniversary, 4AD reissue a newly remastered edition of a record that had long been out of print — made by Kristin Hersh, Tanya Donelly, Leslie Langston and David Narcizo while the band were still in their teens.
The songs came out of a car accident Hersh suffered as a teenager, which left her with serious injuries and what she called "a lightning rod to the skull" that made her hear music no one else could: music with jagged edges and unexpected melodic leaps. Label chief Ivo Watts-Russell funded the project after hearing their self-released cassette in traffic — "The music was hard and aggressive, but the more you lived with it, the more their beauty came through." Forty years on it has lost none of its ability to thrill and unnerve, and its influence runs through the alt-rock, grunge and riot grrrl scenes that followed.
