Pro-Ject - Debut Carbon EVO Turntable

The Debut that made the carbon tonearm ordinary — a one-piece carbon arm tube, a 1.7kg steel platter and eight coats of hand-applied paint, at a price that made the rest of the entry-level market rethink itself.

Pro-Ject built the original Debut in 1999 around a simple argument: that a rigid MDF plinth, a decent bearing and a belt-driven AC motor could be made in Europe for the money everyone else was spending on plastic. The Debut Carbon Evolution — Debut Carbon EVO on Pro-Ject’s own paperwork — is the generation where that argument matured. The tonearm is a single piece of carbon fibre rather than an aluminium tube with a carbon wrap, the platter is 1.7kg of steel with TPE damping bonded to its underside, and the feet are height-adjustable damped aluminium rather than the moulded rubber the range started with.

Speed change is electronic. There is a rocker on the underside of the plinth that moves the deck between 33 and 45rpm without lifting the platter, which is the single biggest quality-of-life improvement over the older Debuts. A separate round belt is supplied for 78rpm and that one does have to be fitted by hand.

A word about the cartridge, because it matters. Pro-Ject’s European specification for this deck is an Ortofon 2M Red, factory-fitted and pre-aligned. Pro-Ject’s own product page carries a note that the US version ships with a Sumiko Rainier instead. We have seen both fitments reach this market. Call or email before you order if the cartridge choice is what decides it for you, and we will tell you exactly what is on the deck in the box.

The tonearm has an effective mass of 6g, which is genuinely light. That suits high-compliance moving-magnet cartridges — the 2M range, Sumiko’s Oyster series, Audio-Technica’s VM line — and it is worth knowing before you go shopping for a low-compliance moving coil, which would be a poor match here.
