Pro-Ject - Speaker Box 5 S2 (Pair)

The second-generation Speaker Box 5: same drivers, 2dB more sensitive, a braced MDF cabinet with a direct-wired crossover and no circuit board, and eight finishes including real walnut and eucalyptus veneer.

Pro-Ject kept the recipe and rebuilt the execution. The 130mm fibreglass woofer and the 25mm silk-dome tweeter on a neodymium magnet carry over unchanged from the original Speaker Box 5, and so does the 55Hz–20kHz published response and the 10-to-150-watt amplifier recommendation. What changed is everything around them.

The cabinet is described by Pro-Ject as ultra-stiff, non-resonating MDF with internal bracing, assembled with a low-emission Kleiberit adhesive. It is taller and deeper than the original — 271mm against 255 — and 700 grams heavier per speaker, which is where the bracing shows up. The port fires rearward.

The crossover is direct-wired with no printed circuit board and lead-free solder, which is a choice you see more often several price brackets up. Whether it is the crossover or the cabinet or both, the published sensitivity has gone from 86dB to 88dB with the same drivers, and the impedance specification has firmed up from a 4–8Ω range to a straight 8Ω nominal — a friendlier load for a small amplifier.

Finishes went from three gloss lacquers to eight: real walnut and eucalyptus veneers, plus satin black, white, yellow, green, blue and red. Magnetically attached, acoustically transparent grilles are included.

One gap worth mentioning: the original Speaker Box 5’s specification stated that wall-mount hardware was included. Pro-Ject’s current S2 page does not mention mounting provision either way. Ask us before ordering if you intend to wall-mount them and we will check what is in the carton.
