On his acclaimed 2005 Blue Note debut, pianist and composer Robert Glasper showed off jazz chops in abundance with his acoustic trio of bassist Vicente Archer and drummer Damion Reid - while a hip-hop sensibility lurked just beneath the surface in the album's skittering beats. Featuring guests Mark Turner on tenor saxophone and vocalist Bilal, Canvas presents nine Glasper originals plus a nod to Herbie Hancock with a version of 'Riot,' hinting at the genre-blurring directions he would later take.
