Empathy came about through a fortuitous convergence: while Shelly Manne & His Men shared a Village Vanguard bill with the Bill Evans Trio, Creed Taylor set up a session at Rudy Van Gelder's studio with Evans and Manne sharing top billing, rounded out by bassist Monty Budwig. Freed from his usual trio parameters, Evans plays lighter, freer and more relaxed than he had in some time, with Manne driving him toward sharper, more diminished invention. Recorded in 1962.
