Released in 1996, Down on the Upside is Soundgarden's fifth studio album and the band's third with bassist Ben Shepherd. Notably less heavy than its predecessors, the record finds the group experimenting with new sounds and textures following the worldwide success of Superunknown. It would prove to be Soundgarden's final studio album for 16 years.
