Recorded in 1975 and released on Strata-East, Regeneration finds pianist Stanley Cowell — co-leader of Music Inc. with Charles Tolliver — pursuing a jazz-infused, African-rooted pop direction. He assembled a strong cast including Marion Brown, Billy Higgins, and Ed Blackwell alongside African string and percussion players, weaving in vocals, a fife-and-drum piece, and the bass of Bill Lee for a singular mid-'70s statement. Reissued on audiophile vinyl by Pure Pleasure.
