The only "group" on the Black Jazz roster, The Awakening should be heralded as one of the great bands in early '70s jazz. Mirage (1973) is their second and final album together, featuring the same Chicago-based, AACM-centric lineup, with the notable addition of bassist Rufus Reid on a couple of tracks. Spiritual jazz, free jazz, soul jazz, and fusion are woven into a beautiful sonic whole that's greater than the sum of its parts. This limited blue-with-black-swirl edition (500 copies) comes with liner notes by Pat Thomas.
