Recorded at the end of a string of Scandinavian engagements, Archie Shepp + The New York Contemporary Five, Vol. 2 captures a group of young musicians breaking new ground far from home. In November 1963, the quintet — formed specifically for their engagement at Copenhagen's Montmartre club — was consolidating the avant-garde jazz pioneered by Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor before New York clubs had fully embraced the style. The album documents Archie Shepp's early technical prowess and experimental instincts, well before he became recognized as a central figure in avant-garde jazz.
