Before the word goth had even taken shape, a brazen and haunting gang of five women formed Xmal Deutschland in Hamburg. Early Singles (1981-1982) maps the foundational moments of the band, from the unsettling "Schwarze Welt" seven-inch on local punk label ZickZack to the post-punk classic "Incubus Succubus," all driven by Anja Huwe's uniquely venomous German vocals. Bonus tracks "Kaelbermarsch" and a gritty live version of "Allein" round out the collection.
