Yamaha - A-S2200 Integrated Amplifier

The A-S1200’s chassis and power taken further: a fully balanced circuit from the XLR input all the way to the speaker terminals, PC-Triple C internal wiring, brass hardware, and a 114 dB signal-to-noise ratio on the balanced input — the quietest input on any A-S amplifier.

The balanced XLR input is what defines this model. It is the only integrated amplifier in Yamaha’s A-S range that has one, it sits at the top of the rear panel ahead of the phono input, and Yamaha publishes a 114 dB signal-to-noise figure for it against 110 dB for the CD input. Yamaha describes the whole amplifier as a fully balanced circuit design from input to speaker output — a step on from the A-S1200’s floating balanced power amplifier wording. Internal speaker wiring is PC-Triple C at 2.7 mm diameter, the speaker terminals are pure brass hand-tightening posts, and the chrome-plated brass feet are welded directly to the chassis.

Set expectations correctly on power. The A-S2200 and the A-S1200 carry identical rated output — 90 watts into 8 ohms and 150 into 4, both at 0.07% distortion. On Yamaha’s own numbers this is not a more powerful amplifier than the one below it. It is a build and connectivity upgrade: the balanced input, double the headphone output at 50 mW a side with a four-position gain trim, the PC-Triple C wiring, and the brass hardware. Anyone shopping on wattage alone should know that before spending the difference.

The phono stage, level meters, tone controls and MAIN IN / PRE OUT arrangement are as on the A-S1200: switchable moving-magnet and moving-coil on one input pair, ±0.5 dB RIAA, switchable peak and VU meters with a dimmer. As on the A-S1200 there are no digital inputs of any kind and no DAC, and Yamaha’s own documentation shows neither a Pure Direct button nor a loudness control — a third-party review reports a −20 dB audio mute switch in that position instead.

Also note the 0.07% distortion condition on the power rating. It is roughly four times looser than the 0.019% figure used for the A-S301 through A-S801, so a straight wattage comparison between this amplifier and the smaller models is not meaningful.

Third-party retailers and reviewers often assert “made in Japan” for this model — Yamaha does not.

Yamaha states that warranty registration is not required for coverage. The warranty is enforceable only by the original purchaser and is not transferable. The owner pays shipping to the service centre; Yamaha covers return shipping on a covered repair. Yamaha’s US warranty index separately links an Additional Promotional Warranty for select A-S models (A-S3200, A-S1200 and A-S2200) offering three further years — five in total — on registration of the model and serial number with a free Yamaha account. We could not confirm from the promotion page whether it remains open to new purchases, so we quote the base two-year term above and suggest checking current eligibility with Yamaha at the time of purchase.
