Albert Ayler's 1969 album New Grass has been misunderstood since the day of its release. Ayler experiments with soul music and digs back into his R&B roots, fusing them with avant-garde free jazz and adding vocals from Rose Marie McCoy, The Soul Singers, and Ayler himself. As if predicting the divisiveness to follow, Ayler speaks directly to the listener in the opener "Message from Albert," explaining that New Grass is of "a different dimension of his life." Third Man Records can't recommend this record highly enough — an undeniable healing force.
