Where 'Selected Ambient Works Vol. II' closed out his analogue era, '...I Care Because You Do' opened a more intricate, abstract and digital chapter — anagram track titles, distorted hip-hop beats and tangled drum loops folding melancholy and aggression in equal measure. The self-portrait cover signals a new era of bracing sonic experimentation.
