Though not the earliest entry in the genre, Ambient 1: Music for Airports was the first album ever explicitly labelled "ambient music." Brian Eno conceived it while waiting at Cologne Bonn Airport, designing the looping, unobtrusive compositions to defuse the tense atmosphere of an airport terminal. The album features contributions from Robert Wyatt and Rhett Davies.
