One of nine companion EPs accompanying Bright Eyes' comprehensive reissue campaign, Fevers and Mirrors: A Companion pairs substantially reworked songs from the 2000 album with era-appropriate material. As Conor Oberst put it, the reworkings "had to sound different from the originals — we had to mess with them in a substantial way." Guest contributors across the companion series include Phoebe Bridgers, M. Ward, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, and Katie Crutchfield of Waxahatchee.
