Curtis Mayfield's soundtrack to the 1972 blaxploitation film Super Fly is his most iconic statement and a defining classic of '70s soul and funk. Bolstered by the million-selling singles “Freddie's Dead” and the title track, it became one of the few soundtracks to out-gross the film it accompanied. Alongside Marvin Gaye's What's Going On, it pioneered the socially aware soul concept album, with unflinching lyrics about poverty and drug abuse set to deep grooves, trademark wah-wah guitar, and stinging brass. This 50th anniversary expanded edition adds a full disc of bonus single mixes, instrumentals, and demos, with lacquers cut directly from the master analog tapes by Kevin Gray.
