The Turnaround! draws on two quintet sessions recorded two years apart, pairing Mobley's tenor with the crackling trumpet of Freddie Hubbard on most tracks and Donald Byrd on the rest. The title cut is a hard-bop boogaloo in the spirit of Lee Morgan's "Sidewinder," with Billy Higgins and Barry Harris driving the groove, while Mobley's clipped, bluesy phrasing makes the strongest impression throughout. Supporting players across the dates include pianists Herbie Hancock and Barry Harris, bassists Butch Warren and Paul Chambers, and drummers Philly Joe Jones and Billy Higgins.
