For his third Blue Note album, Inventions & Dimensions (1963), Herbie Hancock moved away from the hard bop of his first two records in search of greater freedom. Backed by bassist Paul Chambers, drummer Willie Bobo, and percussionist Osvaldo Martinez, he built a set of largely improvised originals, each with its own inner logic. A standout of his early Blue Note years.
