After his avant-garde Blue Note years, Herbie Hancock turned toward a blend of soul, jazz, and funk — and Man-Child (1975) is one of his funkiest statements. Rather than hiring jazz players to play funk, Hancock assembled funk musicians with a feel for jazz, joined by guests including Wayne Shorter, Bennie Maupin, Ernie Watts, and Stevie Wonder on harmonica. The whole band locks into concentrated grooves around Hancock's intricate web of electronic keyboards, with each player given room to shine.
