Herbie Hancock's 1962 debut arrived fully formed, the young pianist leading a powerhouse quintet of Freddie Hubbard, Dexter Gordon, Butch Warren, and Billy Higgins through six of his own compositions. Rooted in hard bop but rich with blues and gospel feeling, it yielded the enduring hit "Watermelon Man" alongside the gorgeous closing ballad "Alone and I." This Blue Note 80 edition was mastered by Kevin Gray from the analog tapes.
