Recorded in December 1967, Demon's Dance finds alto saxophonist Jackie McLean holding a decidedly post-bop edge with a spirited quintet featuring trumpeter Woody Shaw, pianist LaMont Johnson, bassist Scott Holt, and drummer Jack DeJohnette. The six-song set offers a pair of tunes each by McLean, Shaw, and composer Cal Massey, highlighted by the churning title track, Shaw's bossa-tinged "Sweet Love of Mine," and Massey's "Message from Trane," a tribute to John Coltrane. The album is also famous for its striking cover art by Mati Klarwein, who later created the cover for Miles Davis' Bitches Brew.
