James Jay Raymond was born in Washington, D.C. in 1941 and began his recording career as Little Jimmy Ray. By 1961 he had teamed up with songwriter Rudy Clark, whose songs in Ray's voice caught the ear of Caprice Records and launched a string of hits including “If You Gotta Make a Fool of Somebody” and “I've Got My Mind Set on You.” That title became Ray's most famous number decades later when George Harrison took his cover to the top of the charts in 1987 — a revival the singer, who died in 1963, never lived to see.
