After her 1972 debut Whatever's For Us, Joan Armatrading's sophomore album Back to the Night (1975) brought her a step closer to the complete, distinctive singer-songwriter the world would come to know. The songs are tightly constructed, melodic and harmonically rich, with arrangements ranging from simple guitar to full band that always support her expressive voice. Backing musicians include members of Cat Stevens' band, with Andy Summers playing lead guitar on "Steppin' Out."
