By 1972, both Nesmith and RCA were dismayed at his lack of commercial success following his 1970 departure from The Monkees, so he wryly titled the album — which would certainly not yield a Top 40 hit — And The Hits Just Keep On Comin'. It became his most critically acclaimed record and is now viewed as a ground-breaking marvel of country-rock.
