In 1958, the young French composer-arranger Michel Legrand traveled to New York and convinced the very best players of the era to record an album of largely jazz standards. The result, Legrand Jazz, features performances from Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Ben Webster, Phil Woods and dozens more, reinventing the nature of orchestral jazz repertoire with Legrand's idiosyncratic, forward-looking arrangements. Impex's SACD preserves the wide soundstage of late-1950s Columbia recordings while opening up intimate space between the players.
