Recorded live in Tokyo on July 14, 1964, Miles in Tokyo is the only album to capture an early incarnation of Miles Davis's Second Great Quintet with Sam Rivers on tenor saxophone, alongside Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams. It was Davis's first recording in Japan, and Rivers's lone appearance with the group before Wayne Shorter completed the classic lineup.
