Ortofon - 2M Red MM Phono Cartridge

The entry point to Ortofon’s 2M series — a tipped elliptical diamond on a quad-coil generator, and the starting point of an upgrade path that runs through the whole line.

Ortofon’s own pitch for the 2M Red is about immediacy rather than analysis: it delivers an open, dynamic sound with a slight touch of warmth. It is the least expensive cartridge in the series and it does not pretend otherwise, but the engineering underneath it is the same quad-coil generator with split pole pins that runs through the range, wound here with OFC wire.

The diamond is a tipped elliptical with an 8/18 µm radius on an aluminium cantilever. Output is a generous 5.5mV, which means any moving magnet phono stage will drive it happily at the standard 47k ohm load, and the body is a half-inch mount with a threaded plate, so it bolts on with two screws and no fiddling with nuts.

The reason the Red matters more than its price suggests is the upgrade path. Ortofon states plainly that the engines, coils and magnets across the series are not identical — Red, Blue and Silver share one configuration, Bronze and Black share another, and Mono and 78 share a third. Because the Red and Blue are electrically the same cartridge, fitting a 2M Blue stylus to a Red body genuinely gives you Blue performance. Ortofon markets exactly that upgrade, and it takes seconds with no realignment.

Worth knowing before you buy: a Red plus a Blue stylus costs more than a Blue bought outright. The upgrade makes sense when you already own the Red and the stylus is worn, not as a purchasing strategy from scratch.

• Stylus Interchange: Ortofon states 2M styli are interchangeable within three closed groups: Red, Blue and Silver; Bronze, Black and Black LVB 250; Mono and 78. A 2M Blue stylus fitted to this body gives Blue performance, and Ortofon actively endorses that upgrade. A Bronze or Black stylus will physically fit but sits outside this group — different engine, different tracking force — and Ortofon nowhere states the combination is supported
• Mounting: Half inch (1/2″) mount. The 2M threaded mounting plate is 3mm thick, so no nuts are needed. Ortofon supplies a pair of M2.5 screws with a 5mm thread length, to be used with headshells up to 3.5mm thick. Ortofon warns against overtightening and against aluminium screws, which can seize in the threaded holes
• Stylus Life: Ortofon rates its styli at up to 1000 hours with proper care, and notes that DJ use — scratching and back-cueing — should be reckoned at about 500 hours at most. This is a general figure across the range rather than a per-model specification
• Cleaning: Ortofon specifically warns against propyl alcohol and other cleaning fluids, which can seriously damage the diamond cement and the suspension system
• Design: The 2M series was developed with the Danish industrial design house Møller Jensen Design. Ortofon does not publish the year the series launched
• Origin: Ortofon A/S of Nakskov, Denmark. Ortofon states that all its cartridges are designed and crafted in Denmark
• Warranty: Ortofon Inc. covers cartridges bought from an authorised US dealer for one year against defects in workmanship and materials, and excludes expendable items — which on any normal reading excludes the stylus. Note that Ortofon’s own webshop terms quote a two-year warranty instead; a US dealer purchase falls under the one-year terms
• Not Published: Frequency range at −3dB; channel separation at 15kHz; itemised box contents; the year the 2M series launched
• Note on Compliance: Ortofon’s web product pages and its 2M user guide PDF publish different compliance figures for the same cartridges. We quote the product page value; the user guide gives a figure 2 µm/mN lower. Ortofon also never states the frequency at which compliance is measured, which matters when comparing against makers who quote at 100Hz
