Having teamed up on two prior Pacific Jazz recordings, trumpeter Chet Baker and alto saxophonist Art Pepper continued their fruitful collaboration with the supremely swinging 1956 album Picture of Heath (originally released as Playboys until Hugh Hefner objected). The sextet drew on top West Coast talent — tenor saxophonist Phil Urso, pianist Carl Perkins, bassist Curtis Counce, and drummer Larance Marable — and spotlighted five compositions by Jimmy Heath. Mastered by Kevin Gray from the original analog tapes and pressed at RTI, it's quintessential cool jazz in definitive form.
