Donald Byrd - At the Half Note Cafe Vol.1 - Tone Poet LP
$38.99
180g Vinyl LP — Tone Poet Audiophile Reissue, Mastered by Kevin Gray from the Original Analog Tapes
Trumpeter Donald Byrd was just two years into his two-decade Blue Note career when he brought his quintet to Manhattan's Half Note Café in November 1960 to record this soulful, swinging set of hard bop. Joining him are Pepper Adams on baritone saxophone, Duke Pearson on piano, Laymon Jackson on bass, and Lex Humphries on drums. The band hits the ground running on Pearson's up-tempo "My Girl Shirl" before downshifting into Byrd's blues "Soulful Kiddy," then stretches out on the beautiful ballad "A Portrait of Jennie" and beyond.
