J.J. Johnson - The Eminent Jay Jay Johnson, Vol. 1 - Blue Note Classic LP
180g Vinyl LP – Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series, Mastered by Kevin Gray from the Original Master Tapes
Trombonist J.J. Johnson took the language of bebop and adapted it to his instrument, winning the admiration of Fats Navarro, Dizzy Gillespie, and Charlie Parker. After appearing on Miles Davis' first Blue Note session, Johnson led his own dates in 1953 and 1954: a sextet with the brilliant trumpeter Clifford Brown, saxophonist Jimmy Heath, pianist John Lewis, bassist Percy Heath, and drummer Kenny Clarke; and a quintet featuring Wynton Kelly on piano, Charles Mingus on bass, Clarke on drums, and conguero Sabu Martinez. The two sessions were later combined for this 12" release. This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is mono, all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original masters, and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.
