One of the finest pianists and composers of the hard bop era, Sonny Clark seemed to arrive fully formed on his supremely swinging 1957 debut Dial "S" for Sonny. Clark assembled a top-flight sextet — Art Farmer, Curtis Fuller, Hank Mobley, Wilbur Ware, and Louis Hayes — and penned four of the album's six tunes, rounding out the set with the standards "It Could Happen To You" and the Gershwin tune "Love Walked In."
