Thad Jones - Detroit-New York Junction - Third Man LP
$35.99
180g Vinyl, Third Man 313 Series
It would be hard to overstate the importance of the Jones brothers — Thad, Hank and Elvin — on the world of jazz. Detroit - New York Junction, Thad Jones' first for Blue Note from 1956, is a fantastic-sounding announcement that the Detroiters had landed in New York and were ready to take off. Recorded by Alfred Lion and Rudy Van Gelder, it gathers some of the Motor City's most virtuosic students: Thad Jones (trumpet), Kenny Burrell (guitar), Tommy Flanagan (piano) and Billy Mitchell (tenor sax), with Oscar Pettiford on bass and Shadow Wilson on drums — a long-sought rarity and a testament to Detroit's role in the evolution of jazz.
