Breaking a decade of silence, The Mars Volta reawaken from their lengthy hiatus with this self-titled album. Formed by guitarist/composer Omar Rodríguez-López and singer/lyricist Cedric Bixler-Zavala, the band rose from the ashes of At the Drive-In in 2001. Here they trade the dizzying prog of earlier records for subtle, focused songcraft — Caribbean rhythms underpinning turbulent, sophisticated pop. Joined by bassist Eva Gardner, drummer Willy Rodriguez Quiñones, and keyboardist Marcel Rodríguez-López, it is the most accessible music the group has ever recorded.
