5 by Monk by 5 was deliberately conceived as a quintet album — Thelonious Monk's regular 1959 working quartet (Monk on piano, Charlie Rouse on tenor sax, Sam Jones on bass, Art Taylor on drums) plus the striking added voice of cornetist Thad Jones. The album consists of two new Monk compositions and reworkings of three earlier numbers, including "I Mean You," "Ask Me Now," "Jackie-ing," and "Straight, No Chaser." This reissue was mastered AAA by Kevin Gray from the original analog master tapes and pressed on 180g vinyl at Quality Record Pressings.
