Tyrone Washington - Natural Essence - Tone Poet LP
180g Vinyl LP, Blue Note Tone Poet Audiophile Reissue, Mastered by Kevin Gray (AAA), Pressed at RTI
Tyrone Washington's 1967 debut Natural Essence introduced a vital new voice in jazz, moving between exploratory post-bop and groove-based soul jazz with the charged intensity of the avant-garde. Having emerged from Horace Silver's Quintet, the tenor saxophonist offers six original compositions backed by trumpeter Woody Shaw, alto saxophonist James Spaulding, pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Reggie Workman, and drummer Joe Chambers. Highlights include the sinuous title track, the plaintive ballad "Yearning for Love," the hard-driving swing of "Positive Path," and the irrepressible groove of "Soul Dance." This stereo Tone Poet edition was mastered by Kevin Gray from the original analog master tapes and pressed on 180g vinyl at RTI in a deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket.
